Quick Verdict

A visually arresting but emotionally hollow cyberpunk noir that collapses under the weight of its own convoluted mythology. Strong performances and a handful of genuinely hypnotic sequences cannot rescue a script that mistakes confusion for depth. 4.7/10

Story

The premise is pure genre comfort food. In a near-future society ruled by sentient artificial intelligence, a private investigator named Jan 623 (Andrzej Konopka) is hired to solve a murder. Standard stuff, right up until he stumbles onto a rebel group with the capacity to undermine the digital overlord itself. From there, the film spirals into a fugue state of shifting identities, false memories, and reality-bending set pieces that blur the line between what Jan experiences and what the AI wants him to experience.

That is the generous reading, anyway. The less generous reading is that Hot Spot has no idea what it wants to say. Characters appear, deliver cryptic pronouncements, and vanish. Noomi Rapace's Rana seems to be a resistance fighter, or perhaps a ghost, or possibly a subroutine. Reika Kirishima's Ayka is either a handler or a hallucination, and the film never quite decides which. By the time the third act arrives, the investigation has long since stopped mattering. The murder is a MacGuffin, the AI is a metaphor, and the whole enterprise is less a story than a mood board with a runtime.

Review

Here is the frustrating thing about Hot Spot: Smoczyńska can direct. Her eye for composition is extraordinary, and the film's best sequences - a chase through a corridor that keeps reconfiguring itself, a conversation in a diner where the lighting shifts from warm to clinical between every cut - are genuinely hypnotic in the way the premise promises. The production design owes a debt to Blade Runner and Dark City, but there is a tactile, grotty quality to the world that feels distinctive. This is a future where everything is slightly broken, slightly wet, slightly wrong.

Konopka is the film's anchor. He plays Jan with a weary, physical intensity that suggests a man who has been doing this too long and trusts no one, least of all himself. Rapace brings a feral edge to Rana, and Kirishima is genuinely eerie as the enigmatic Ayka. The cast is doing real work here, which makes the material's failures all the more disappointing.

Because the script - credited to three writers, which is rarely a good sign - is a mess. It front-loads its mythology with no clear rules, then expects the audience to be moved by revelations about Jan's identity that carry no emotional weight because we never understood who he was in the first place. The dialogue aims for terse and cryptic but lands on nonsensical. Characters say things like "The signal is the cage" and "You were never the detective" and we are supposed to nod along. By the hour mark, I had stopped trying to follow the plot and started trying to follow the mood, which is more achievable but ultimately less satisfying.

The film's most glaring problem is its pacing. At 101 minutes, it should feel tighter than it does. Instead, the middle act sags under the weight of exposition delivered in hushed tones and scenes that exist purely to establish how weird everything is. Weirdness without purpose becomes exhausting. The final act, which should be a crescendo of identity-shattering revelation, plays like a series of disconnected images set to a droning score. It is atmospheric to a fault.

Both TMDb (4.8) and IMDb (4.6) suggest audiences are not connecting with this one, and it is easy to see why. Hot Spot is the kind of film that will develop a small, passionate cult following in a decade - the kind of people who love it precisely because it does not make sense. For everyone else, it is a beautiful, baffling slog.

Final Verdict

Hot Spot is a film at war with itself. There is a compelling cyberpunk noir buried somewhere in here, and flashes of it surface in Smoczyńska's imagery and Konopka's performance. But the script is so determined to be enigmatic that it forgets to be coherent, and the result is a film that feels less like a mystery to be solved than a puzzle with missing pieces. If you are a devoted fan of atmospheric science fiction and do not mind a plot that dissolves on contact, there is something here worth experiencing. For everyone else, this is a hot spot best left unexplored.
