Jason Sudeikis is stepping back into the feathers of one of animation's grumpiest heroes. A new trailer for "Angry Birds Movie 3" puts Red, the temperamental flightless bird voiced by Sudeikis, at the center of a story that leans hard into parenting humor while reintroducing the mysterious green pigs who first disrupted his island paradise.

The trailer sketches a familiar setup with a fresh domestic twist. Red, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad) and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride) have long been outsiders on an island populated almost entirely by cheerful, flightless birds. When mysterious green piggies arrive, the trio of misfits must work out what the visitors are really after. The sequel's marketing leans on Sudeikis's everyman exasperation, recasting Red's short fuse as the natural temperament of a reluctant father figure.

The film is directed by Clay Kaytis, who also helmed the original 2016 feature. That first entry, released on May 11, 2016, runs 97 minutes and carries a TMDb rating of 6.293 out of 10. It is an English-language Hollywood production spanning animation, adventure, comedy and family genres.

Sudeikis anchors a cast that mixes comedy heavyweights with unexpected names. Gad voices Chuck, McBride voices Bomb, and Maya Rudolph plays Matilda. Bill Hader voices Leonard, Peter Dinklage voices Mighty Eagle, Sean Penn voices Terence and Keegan-Michael Key voices Judge Peckinpah.

The premise remains deliberately simple - an island of happy birds, a trio of outcasts and a band of suspicious pigs - but the new trailer suggests the franchise is aging alongside its original audience, trading some of the first film's slapstick for jokes about responsibility and fatherhood.

"Angry Birds Movie 3" is slated for release on May 11, 2016.
